Activists Protest E.U. Handling Of Software Patent Bill

Law360 (May 11, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A coalition of activist groups has launched a campaign against what they see as an effort by the European Union’s Council of Ministers to secure passage of patent protection for software without approval of the European Parliament.

Last week, the Irish Presidency managed to secure a qualified majority for a counter-proposal to the software patents directive. The proposed text for the Computer-Implemented Inventions directive will be submitted for review by the E.U.’s Competitiveness Council at its meeting scheduled for May 17.
