Kroes Repeats Calls For Energy Sector Breakup

Law360, New York (November 30, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- In order to ensure sustainable and affordable energy supplies, Europe must break up the national incumbents and begin to embrace an “integrated and competitive” market in the energy sector, according to E.U. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes.

"A clear separation of interests between the network operators, energy producers and energy companies is imperative," said Kroes. "A competitive internal market is the only way to deliver security of supply to European consumers and the community’s environmental objectives in a cost effective way.”
