Canada To Pass Generics Bill Friday

Law360 (May 13, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Canada is expected to pass pioneering legislation Friday making it legal for generic versions of patented medicines to be shipped to poor countries suffering from AIDS and other health crises.

The Senate is expected to pass the bill Friday. Canada’s House of Commons approved unanimously the bill last week.

The measure was designed largely to allow generic-drug firms to make and sell cheap HIV antiretrovirals in poor countries hit hard by AIDS.

Under the measure, about 50 countries would be eligible to buy the cheap drugs...
