FTC Highlights Agency's Identity Theft Protections

By Nadia Dreid (January 20, 2022, 5:53 PM EST) -- People stole identities last year at about the same rate as the year before, but the types of fraud they committed shifted as the COVID-19 pandemic wore on, according to the Federal Trade Commission at its latest open meeting.

While there was no marked difference in the number of identity theft reports that the agency received in 2021 versus 2020, the FTC said Thursday. It added that the first year of the pandemic saw a massive uptick in identity theft related to unemployment fraud.
