FDA Won't Totally Ban Phthalates From Food Packaging

By Emily Field (May 20, 2022, 7:52 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has said it will not completely ban a group of chemicals called phthalates from use in food packaging, turning down petitions to curb their use.

The FDA said it denied one of the petitions brought by public interest groups that wanted the agency to ban the use of certain phthalates in food packaging because the petition didn't show scientific data that the ban would be warranted. But it revoked the previous authorization of others out of safety concerns.
