Novartis Sues To Protect Hypertension Drug

Law360 (December 15, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Novartis International AG is suing one of India’s largest pharmaceutical companies, accusing the generics maker of infringing Novartis’ patent covering the billion-dollar hypertension treatment Lotrel.

The suit was filed Thursday on behalf of Novartis International and two U.S.-based subsidiaries against Mumbai-based Lupin Ltd. and Lupin’s U.S. subsidiary, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Marlyand.

At issue is U.S. Patent No. 6,162,802, entitled “Synergistic Combination Therapy Using Benazepril and Amlodipine for the Treatment of Cardiovascular disorders and Compositions Therefore,” which was issued in December 2000. The ‘802 patent, which...
