Roberts Allows DC Gay Marriage Law To Take Effect

Law360, New York (March 2, 2010, 7:42 PM EST) -- Justice John G. Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday denied a bid from a group of voters in Washington, D.C., to put on hold a bill extending marriage rights to same-sex couples, prompting them to launch another legal challenge to the controversial measure.

In a three-page ruling, Justice Roberts decided that the petitioners' request for a stay of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009, which goes into effect Wednesday, is not warranted.
