Fla. Court Affirms $24.9M Verdict For Smoker's Estate

Law360, New York (March 19, 2010, 5:43 PM EDT) -- A Florida appeals court has upheld a $24.86 million award to the estate of an ex-smoker who died of cancer, in one of thousands of suits in the Sunshine State accusing Big Tobacco of concealing the side effects of smoking.

The Third District Court of Appeal in Florida affirmed on Tuesday a ruling that Philip Morris USA, Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. and Liggett Group must pay compensatory damages to the estates of John Lukacs, who died of cancer, and his wife Yolanda.
