Power Supply Merger Raises Competition Concerns

Law360, New York (January 4, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Australia’s competition watchdog said Thursday it would not speculate on reports it could block a proposed $13.3 billion merger between AGL Energy and Origin Energy.

A spokesman for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said no such proposal had been put forward for consideration.

“If any such merger is proposed the ACCC will review it closely and thoroughly,” said spokesman Brent Rebecca.

Rebecca said the ACCC would not comment on the implications to competition of a merger between two of the nation’s largest gas suppliers....
