Agilent, Variant Deal Wins Approval In Australia

Law360, New York (March 31, 2010, 6:48 PM EDT) -- Australia's competition authority has approved scientific instrument maker Agilent Technologies Inc.'s $1.5 billion acquisition of rival Varian Inc. on the condition that the companies go through with divestitures they had already promised to make to win approval for the European Union.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said Wednesday that it believed the conditions imposed by the EU were enough to eliminate any competition concerns.
