DOJ To Give Closer Look To Schlumberger, Smith Merger

Law360, New York (April 5, 2010, 6:49 PM EDT) -- U.S. antitrust regulators have begun a deeper probe of oil field services giant Schlumberger Ltd.'s planned $11.3 billion acquisition of rival Smith International Inc.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Antitrust Division asked for more information on the planned merger, an inquiry commonly known as a “second request,” Schlumberger said Monday. Schlumberger is not sure exactly when the transaction will close but expects that the deal will still be concluded sometime during the second half of 2010, it said.
