FDA Concerns Lead Lawmaker To Seek Triclosan Ban

Law360, New York (April 8, 2010, 2:31 PM EDT) -- Rep. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., urged federal regulators Thursday to ban triclosan as an antimicrobial agent in soaps and other products, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration told the legislator it was worried about the possible long-term effects of the chemical on human health and the environment.

Both the FDA and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are concerned about recent research showing that triclosan and triclocarbon, a related chemical, may disrupt the endocrine system, according to recent letters both agencies sent the congressman.
