Asarco To Pay Fine Over Ariz. Pipeline Rupture

Law360, New York (April 12, 2010, 4:45 PM EDT) -- Asarco LLC has agreed to shell out $20,000 in civil penalties stemming from a 2007 incident in which a pipeline for its Hayden, Ariz.-based mining operation ruptured and allegedly dumped more than a thousand gallons of tailings into a nearby river.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the Office of the Arizona Attorney General on Monday said Asarco agreed to pay the fine under a consent judgment for releasing tailings into the Gila River without a permit and in violation of surface water quality rules....
