BHP Digs Up Possible Dirty Dealings Amid SEC Probe

Law360, New York (April 21, 2010, 3:47 PM EDT) -- BHP Billiton Ltd. has revealed that it is the subject of a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe and that an internal investigation has uncovered possible corruption by employees involving interactions with government officials.

The Australian mining giant said in its first-quarter earnings report Wednesday that the SEC had requested information in relation to “certain terminated minerals exploration projects" and that the company's own investigation, in which Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP is providing counsel, was ongoing.
