European Union Rejects Community Trademark For Budweiser

Law360, New York (June 22, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Union has rejected Anheuser-Busch’s 1996 “community trademark” application for its Budweiser brand, dealing the world’s largest brewer a setback in its century-old battle over the beer brand.

As a result, Anheuser-Busch Cos. cannot register its Budweiser name as a single trademark in all 25 European Union countries and must rely on previously held national trademarks.

In rejecting the application, the E.U.'s Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market said the Budweiser name is identical to one already registered by Czech rival Budejovicky Budvar NP...
