Legislators Seek To Sink Flood Insurance Mandate

Law360, New York (May 3, 2010, 4:45 PM EDT) -- Three Arkansas Democrats — Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Rep. Marion Berry — have introduced legislation to combat attempts by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to mandate that homeowners and businesses purchase flood insurance.

The lawmakers have concerns with FEMA’s approach to redrawing floodplain maps, which they believe will unfairly penalize areas in Arkansas that are protected by levees, including those built and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, they said Thursday.
