DOI To Split Offshore Drilling Enforcement, Lease Duties

Law360, New York (May 11, 2010, 4:30 PM EDT) -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Tuesday that the agency that oversees offshore oil drilling would be split up to separate safety and environmental enforcement functions from leasing and permitting activities.

The Minerals Management Service, which currently collects billions of dollars in revenue each year in U.S. oil and gas leases, will be restructured to establish an independent entity to enforce safety and environmental laws and regulations.
