Tokyo Customs Bars Taiwan LCD TV Imports In Sharp Patent Case

Law360, New York (June 28, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Tokyo Customs has accepted a request by consumer electronics maker Sharp Corp. to halt the importation of liquid crystal display televisions sold by the Japanese unit of rival Taiwanese electronics firm Teco Electric & Machinery Co, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports.

The Tokyo Customs will begin procedures to determine whether the imports infringe on Sharp's patent rights. The revised customs law that went into effect in April 2003 states that a determination must be made within 70 days after such procedures are launched.
