GOP Lambastes EPA For Holding Up Coal Permits

Law360, New York (May 21, 2010, 6:32 PM EDT) -- Republican senators are accusing the Obama administration of using the Clean Water Act permitting process to dismantle the Appalachian coal industry, even for mines that do not involve mountaintop removal.

About a year ago, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency subjected 235 coal-mining permits to enhanced review, and only 45 have been granted since then, according to a report released Friday by minority members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, led by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla.
