Gulf Spill, Overfishing Prompt Tuna ESA Petition

Law360, New York (May 24, 2010, 6:56 PM EDT) -- A conservation group has requested that the Atlantic bluefin tuna be protected under the Endangered Species Act, saying the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is threatening to finish off what overfishing started.

In a formal scientific petition filed Monday, the Center for Biological Diversity said overfishing — mostly for use in sushi — has already erased more than 80 percent of the bluefin tuna in the North Atlantic compared to what the population would be without fishing pressures.
