Varney Vows Tough Reviews For Health Insurer Mergers

Law360, New York (May 24, 2010, 7:14 PM EDT) -- With the recently passed health care reform law prioritizing efforts to cut costs, the U.S. Department of Justice's top antitrust enforcer vowed Monday to stop any health insurance mergers that threaten competition.

The DOJ's Antitrust Division "will not hesitate to block" combinations that might hinder competition in the industry, Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney told a joint meeting of the American Bar Association and American Health Lawyers Association on Monday.
