Enviro Group Hits BP With CWA Suit Over Spill

Law360, New York (June 3, 2010, 7:19 PM EDT) -- As the Obama administration sent BP PLC a preliminary bill of $69 million for response efforts Thursday, the Center for Biological Diversity formally notified the oil giant of its intent to file suit under the Clean Water Act, potentially making the petroleum giant liable for billions in penalties.

BP is liable for every gallon of oil that gushes into the Gulf of Mexico and is potentially liable for pollution from other toxic chemicals, such as benzene, arsenic and mercury, according to the environmental group.
