US Signs EU Banana Tariff Deal

Law360, New York (June 8, 2010, 6:42 PM EDT) -- The U.S. and the European Union have signed an agreement to put an end to a long-running dispute over the EU's banana trading regime.

Under the deal, which was first agreed to in December, the EU pledged not to reintroduce measures that discriminate among banana distributors based on the ownership or control of the distributors or the source of the bananas, and to maintain a nondiscriminatory, tariff-only regime for the importation of bananas, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said Tuesday.
