BP Spill Could Spark Cancer Nightmare For Gulf

Law360, New York (June 10, 2010, 6:19 PM EDT) -- The disastrous BP PLC Deepwater Horizon oil spill may cause an increase in cancer in communities along the Gulf Coast that takes decades to fully appear, scientists warned Congress on Thursday.

“There is a potential public health crisis awaiting us,” said cancer epidemiologist Edward Trapido, a dean at Louisiana State University who spoke along with several other scientists at a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's subcommittee on energy and environment.
