EU Seeks To Certify, Standardize Biofuels

Law360, New York (June 10, 2010, 5:11 PM EDT) -- The European Commission has issued rules for a biofuel certification system in an attempt to standardize the industry before the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive — which sets requirements for greenhouse gas reductions — takes effect in December.

The package calls for all of the EU's industries, governments and nongovernmental organizations to set up voluntary schemes to certify biofuel sustainability and establishes the standards at which the EU will recognize them.
