Sunoco To Pay Up Over Pa. Benzene Release

Law360, New York (June 15, 2010, 2:45 PM EDT) -- Sunoco Inc. has agreed to pay $81,000 in penalties for an accidental release that sent 1,608 pounds of benzene into the air at its Philadelphia oil refinery in January 2007, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday.

The penalties are for failing to notify state and federal environmental agencies immediately about the release as required under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, the agency said.

The company was supposed to have notified the National Response Center, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and local emergency officials...
