Europe Upholds Archus Spine Patent

Law360, New York (January 30, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- A Washington State-based orthopedics company’s patent covering a technique for surgically replacing joints in the spine with a prosthetic implant has survived a challenge before the European Patent Office.

Europe’s patent office on Tuesday confirmed the validity of Archus Orthopedics Inc.’s patent, No. EP-B-1223872, which was issued to the company in December 2004. The patent at issue covers a method of replacing a natural facet joint with a prosthesis anchored to the pedicle.
