Japan Warns Microsoft Over Patent Provisions In Windows Contract

Law360, New York (July 13, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Japan's Fair Trade Commission has issued a warning to Microsoft over patent-related contract provisions that the FTC says violates the Antimonopoly Law.

The largely symbolic move will not be backed by fines or other penalties, but could be important for Japanese manufacturers that develop digital devices, cell phones and other products that can replace personal computers.

Microsoft has until July 26 to decide whether to accept the FTC's warning to drop the contract terms in question.
