E.U. Looks To Reduce Fuel Emissions

Law360, New York (January 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission proposed new rules on Wednesday that, if approved, will force fuel suppliers to cut greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles 10% by 2020.

Specifically, suppliers will have to reduce emissions 1% a year from 2011 to 2020. They will accomplish this, the Commission said, mainly by using a higher percentage of ethanol and other “second generation” biofuels in their gasoline.

Not only will the fuels themselves become cleaner, the Commission added, but vehicles and machinery will also pollute less.
