Senate Panel OKs Stiffer Environmental Penalties

Law360, New York (June 25, 2010, 5:17 PM EDT) -- In response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to advance a bill that would ratchet up the penalties against companies that violate the Clean Water Act and mandate restitution for the victims of environmental crimes.

S. 3466, the Environmental Crimes Enforcement Act of 2010, sponsored by committee chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., was reported out of the committee Thursday.
