Microsoft Licenses New Protocols

Law360, New York (February 1, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Microsoft Corp. said Thursday it would break from tradition by licensing certain protocols to software developers that will help e-mails, instant messages and shared documents function better with Windows-based servers.

The E.U. didn’t order Microsoft to make the licenses available, but did ask it to ensure its rivals’ software was compatible. Microsoft hopes the boost in cooperation will preempt future demands from regulators over its new operating system Windows Vista.
