Wis. Workers' Private E-Mail Ruled Not Public Record

Law360, New York (July 16, 2010, 6:41 PM EDT) -- The Supreme Court of Wisconsin ruled Friday that the state's open records law doesn't apply to workers' personal e-mails even if they're sent from a government account, saying private correspondence doesn't shed light on government affairs.

In a 3-2 decision, the state's highest court reversed a judgment by the Circuit Court for Wood County that allowed the Wisconsin Rapids School District to release the e-mail messages of five public school teachers into the public record.
