Trafigura Fined €1M Over Ivory Coast Waste Export

Law360, New York (July 23, 2010, 2:55 PM EDT) -- A Dutch court fined Trafigura Beheer BV €1 million ($1.3 million) on Friday for transporting toxic waste to the Ivory Coast in 2006 and concealing how harmful the substance was.

The Amsterdam Court found that Trafigura violated European Union waste export regulations, but acquitted the company of forging a notification regarding the ship's toxic substances.

The public prosecutor had sought a fine of €2 million, but the court imposed a lower fine based on the counts it found Trafigura guilty of.
