Insurance Agents Are Not Employees, 9th Circ. Rules

Law360, New York (July 29, 2010, 12:43 PM EDT) -- A federal appeals court has affirmed that insurance agents are not employees, in a victory for Principal Financial Group Inc. that clarifies the legal test for employee status.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Tuesday unanimously upheld a summary judgment tossing a gender bias suit from Principal agent Patricia Murray, who claimed the company violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by favoring her male counterparts.
