Number Of Suits Against Medtronic Spikes

Law360, New York (February 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The number of product liability lawsuits filed over Medtronic Inc.’s allegedly faulty pacemaker defibrillators spiked in the last two months, with some plaintiffs encouraged by a judge's recent refusal to grant Medtronic summary judgment and others rushing to file before state statute of limitations expired.

As of Thursday, 1,800 heart patients had filed 951 suits against the medical device maker, after they were forced to have the defibrillators surgically removed, said Hunter Shkolnik, an attorney in about 300 of the cases. Including spouses and trustees named...
