Chinese Drug Makers Target Glaxo Drug, Citing Viagra Decision

Law360, New York (July 28, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A number of Chinese drug makers are preparing to use the government’s rejection of a patent for Pfizer’s Viagra as a precedent for a challenge to GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes drug Avandia, the Financial Times reports.

The Chinese companies mounting the challenge to the Avandia patent, issued in 1996, include Shanghai Sunve Pharmaceutical and the Taiji Group, based in Chongqing in western China. The case is due to be heard on August 18.
