IP Attorneys Bill More But Get Paid Less

Law360, New York (July 28, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Intellectual property attorneys saw their compensation fall last year, even though their billing rates rose and IP brought in more revenues than virtually every other practice area, a new survey has found.

On average, IP partners saw their total cash compensation, which includes salaries, health insurance and various perks, drop 2.3% to $436,904 in 2003 from the year before, according to the newly released Altman Weil Survey of Law Firm Economics for 2004.

The picture was even bleaker for IP associates, whose cash compensation fell 4.7%...
