E.U. Set To Regulate Non-Horizontal Mergers

Law360, New York (February 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Mergers of European companies may be more strictly regulated in the near future, thanks to new draft guidelines submitted for public consultation by the European Commission Tuesday.

The E.C. said the new guidelines address non-horizontal mergers that result when a company seeks to buy its suppliers or other companies related to its own. While these transactions are not as big a threat to competition as horizontal mergers, the Commission said they are still important to regulate, especially if they might lead to higher prices for consumers....
