DOJ Orders Mittal To Sell Plant, Union Protests

Law360, New York (February 21, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- A workers union plans to oppose a Department of Justice order forcing Mittal Steel Co. to sell its Maryland plant, a move intended to maintain competition in the tin mill market on the east coast following Mittal's acquisition of Arcelor S.A.

Selling the Sparrows Point plant will help offset the effects of Mittal’s $33 billion acquisition of Arcelor S.A., the DOJ said.

However, United Steelworkers, which represents close to 2,300 production and management employees at Sparrows Point, is concerned that the sale will weaken the U.S....
