EPA Shoots Down Request For Ban On Lead Bullets

Law360, New York (August 30, 2010, 3:44 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has rejected a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity and other green groups seeking a ban on lead bullets, saying it does not have the authority to regulate firearms and ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

In a letter Friday, EPA assistant administrator Stephen A. Owens told the petitioners that while the agency could not regulate ammunition, it would still look into the groups' request for a prohibition on the sale of lead-containing fishing gear.
