Basin Electric Fined Over Radiation Exposure

Law360, New York (August 30, 2010, 7:42 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has fined Basin Electric Power Cooperative $24,700 over a 2009 accident that left 17 of the energy company's employees exposed to radioactive materials.

The NRC announced the proposed fine Monday, and Basin has 30 days to pay or appeal.

The radiological incident occurred in September 2009 at the company's Laramie River Station, a coal-firing power plant in Wheatland, Wyo., where 17 employees were exposed to a radioactive particle stream over the course of 12 days, according to an NRC inspection report....
