Chinese Drug Companies Form Alliance To Make Generic Viagra

Law360, New York (August 5, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- An alliance of 17 Chinese drug makers have set up a joint-stock company to produce an erectile dysfunction drug in the wake of Pfizer’s loss of patent protection for Viagra in China, according to the Beijing Morning Post.

The 17 companies met in Beijing last week to discuss issues regarding the establishment of the alliance, the newspaper reported.

Tonghua Hongtaomao Pharmaceutical and Chongqing Kangerwei Pharmaceutical are spearheading the group, which has decided to manufacture generic sildenafil, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Viagra.
