French Court Cuts Damages EBay Must Pay LVMH

Law360, New York (September 3, 2010, 3:06 PM EDT) -- A French appeals court on Friday significantly reduced a June 2008 damages award handed to Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in its lawsuit against eBay Inc.'s French affiliate over sales of fake luxury goods, dropping the amount from €38.6 million ($49.6 million) to €5.7 million ($7.3 million).

The ruling, in the Paris Court of Appeal, upheld eBay's liability and prohibited the online auction giant from direct or indirect violation of the famed fashion designer's trademarks.

The decision left both companies with room to declare victory.
