Calif. Sens. Push Bill To Ratchet Up Pipeline Safety

Law360, New York (September 24, 2010, 1:52 PM EDT) -- In the wake of a San Bruno, Calif., natural gas pipeline explosion that killed seven people, Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., have unveiled legislation that would strengthen oversight of the country's pipelines and increase penalties for violations.

The bill, introduced Wednesday, would require deployment of electronic valves that, unlike manually operated valves, automatically shut off the gas during a fire or other emergency.
