Teachers Union Fined For Strike Talks

Law360, New York (March 1, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- A Massachusetts judge who fined the Boston Teachers Union $70,000 for just contemplating a strike has been accused of stifling free speech.

The union was considering a motion by teachers to discuss the possibility of staging a one-day walkout during a contract dispute, when the Superior Court slapped it with the fine, a union spokesman said.

Late Wednesday leaders of the 8000-member union rescinded the motion to hold the discussion, but by then the judge had imposed the penalty.
