$70M In Extra USPTO Patent Fees May Go Elsewhere

Law360, New York (September 28, 2010, 5:30 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office expects to collect $70 million in excess fees in 2010, but federal lawmakers could effectively claw back the extra cash in a stopgap budget measure pending in Congress.

As of Monday, the USPTO had collected $32.2 million in excess fees for fiscal year 2010, which started Oct. 1, 2009, and was collecting roughly $7.4 million in extra fees daily ahead of the new fiscal year.
