Surprise Inspection Uncovers Violations At Massey Mine

Law360, New York (October 8, 2010, 2:11 PM EDT) -- Federal regulators have cited a Massey Energy Co.-owned coal mine in Boone County, W.Va., for safety violations, saying that the mine was taking illegal cuts to the coal seam and operating without proper ventilation.

During a surprise inspection, federal agents also found that the Seng Creek Powellton Mine was not completing its required air readings, which are used to ensure sufficient air flow to prevent mine explosions, the Mine Safety and Health Administration said in a statement Thursday.
