EU Plans 5-Year Ban On Food From Cloned Animals

Law360, New York (October 19, 2010, 2:24 PM EDT) -- The European Commission plans to impose a five-year ban on animal cloning for food production in the European Union, the executive body said Tuesday, following the lead of the European Parliament and responding to growing pressure from member states for a uniform policy on the issue.

In addition to suspending the production of new cloned animals for food, the proposed rules would also prohibit the use of existing cloned animals for food and any marketing of food derived from clones, the commission said.
