DOI Offshore Drilling Safety Rules Struck Down

Law360, New York (October 20, 2010, 5:28 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of the Interior overstepped its authority when it enforced new safety requirements for offshore drilling operators, a federal judge ruled Wednesday, siding with Ensco Offshore Co. in its challenge to the government's ban on deepwater drilling.

Judge Martin Feldman of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana granted partial summary judgment to Ensco, finding the government did not comply with procedure when it implemented stricter safety procedures for offshore operators as part of its deepwater drilling moratorium.
