Canon Buys Candescent's Flat-Panel Patent Portfolio

Law360, New York (August 25, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a sign of the rising value of intellectual property in the fast-growing market for flat-panel displays, Canon Inc. has agreed to pay 1.3 billion yen ($11.8 million) for Candescent Technologies’ patent portfolio, according to news reports.

Canon will acquire the patents from the U.S. company, which has filed for bankruptcy, as part of it effort to bring to market in 2005 a television featuring surface conduction electron emitter display (SED) technology, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, without citing sources.
